surrender, o yıllarda (90'ların sonları) elektronik müziğin en tanınan ikilisi durumunda olan the chemical brothers için (ki şu anda bile aynı durum geçerli olabilir) yeni bir şeyler deneme albümü gibi duruyor. ikili ilk stüdyo albümü exit planet dust'ta big beat türünü dinleyenlere tanıtmış, ikinci albüm dig your own hole'da da bu türün üstüne bir kaç küçük şey katarak gelmiş geçmiş en iyi elektronik müzik albümlerinden birini yapmıştı.
surrender, big beat'ın karakteristik hip hop ritmlerinden biraz uzaklaşıyor ve rotasını house'un 4x4 ritmlerine çeviriyor. albümün en belirgin değişimi burada başlıyor. bir diğer değişim de, şarkıların daha çok "şarkı formu"nda olması. bu da albümün house'a kaymasından dolayı gerçekleşen bir durum. bir farklılık da, surrender'daki analog synth kullanımındaki fazlalıkta.
albüm music:response'la başlıyor ki ilk saniyesinden "kraftwerk şimdi dans müziği yapsaydı ne yapardı" sorusuna cevap buluyoruz bu şarkıyla. ardından gelen under the influence neredeyse tamamen bas odaklı bir parça, albümün ilk zirvesine gelirken tempoyu iyice yükseltiyor. ilk zirve müthiş bernard sumner* gitar/vokalleriyle out of control. şarkı 99'da ortaya çıktığından beri bütün chems konserlerinde çalınmış, istisnasız.
surrender ikinci bölümüne orange wedge'le başlıyor. çok akılda kalıcı bir parça değil, zaten öyle olması da gerekmiyor zira hemen ardından ultra psychedelic let forever be geliyor. noel* setting sun'da yaptığı gibi bu parçada da vokallerde müthiş bir iş çıkarıyor. gariptir ki şarkı ritm bakımından yine setting sun'a, doğal olarak da tomorrow never knows'a benziyor. surrender'ın ikinci kısmı, let forever be'den daha da hipnotik the sunshine underground'la tamamlanıyor. 9 dakika olmasına rağmen the sunshine underground albümün ortasına tam oturuyor: başlangıç kısmıyla albümün kendisinden önceki bölümünü, son kısmıyla da surrender'ın son bölümünü temsil ediyor adeta.
the sunshine underground'dan sonra hope sandoval vokalli asleep from day, surrender'ın geri kalanı için ihtiyacınız olacak enerjiyi sağlamanız için sizi rahatlatıyor.
enerjiye ihtiyacınız olacak dedim, çünkü asleep from day'den sonra sahneye önce deep house bombası got glint, sonra da hit parça hey boy hey girl çıkıyor. hey boy hey girl hakkında bir şey söylememe gerek yok sanırım, her türk genci bu şarkıda en azından bir kez kolunu başını oynatmıştır.
albümün kapanışında ise nispeten daha yavaş ama daha psychedelic surrender ve dream on yer alıyor. son parçada vokalleri jonathan donahue yapmış, eklemeden geçmeyeyim.
surrender bir gece gibi aslında: ilk iki kısmıyla sizi çılgınca dans ettiriyor, sonra kısa bir ara verip son kez dans pistinde hünerleriniz sergiletiyor. son 2 şarkıyla da yorgun bünyenizi dinlendiriyor.
bu albümü dinlemeyen "ben elektronik müzik dinliyorum!" demesin, çok şey kaçırır.
